Aurora Sports Medicine Facts: Nutritional Requirements of Athletes

What many athletes don't realize is that their definition of a healthy diet doesn't differ much from that of an ordinary less-active person. An athlete's vitamin and fat requirements are consistent with those who don't engage in too much physical activity, and proteins are just being taken in slightly bigger amounts than usual. It's only the carbohydrates that take a different turn in athletes' diets.

Carbs are the body's main energy source, so it's essential that athletes consume more of this type of food. In a list of dietary requisites prepared by the Brown University Health Education department, in which female non-athletes are recommended to eat about 6 to 11 servings of carbs per day, female athletes are encouraged to eat as much as 9 to 15 servings, and male athletes 11 to 18 servings.
